Cowboy Cops Kill Bull

The Town Hall at Las Pedroneras in Cuenca, denied that a bull escaped during the start of last Tuesday's fiesta and was shot by local police 36 times, to kill it.

But this video that turned up on YouTube shows the allegations to be true.

It seems the bull escaped from a garage while the lottery to select the bulls for the next bullfight was going on. In a scene from Keystone Kops the Professionals move in shoot the scared and much wounded animal, rather than wait for a vet to arrive who would use a tranquiliser gun.

Ryanair Cancels Travel Agent Reservations

The UK's cut price airline, Ryanair has cancelled some reservations made through Spanish travel websites, as some agents have been adding a charge of around ten euros per ticket to flights.

Ryanair has said that this practise is against their conditions and have started cancelling tickets bought through such vendors and are returning the money paid to the agents who will be instructed to reimburse customers.

Ryanair says that only bookings made through travel agency websites for flights after August 25th would be cancelled and that all flights booked directly through the Ryanair website will not be affected.

Ryanair justifies its action by saying that the travel sites have violated their conditions of use, and increased their prices with ‘hidden costs’. In the case of Atrápalo.com, the extras amount to 10 € a ticket according to Ryan Air.

Large Numbers Of Illegal Immigrants Returning Home

There has been a sharp increase in the number of non EU immigrants looking to return to their home countries, according to three non governmental reports.

The Red Cross, The International Migration Organisation and Spanish Catholic Migration Commission have all reported that the number of 'returnees' has increased dramatically.

The returns are no doubt prompted by organisations such as those above who are digging into their own resources to pay for fares back home.

Spain Fights First Large Scale Forest Fire During Heatwave

The Spanish Ministry Of Defence have sent 285 soldiers to an area in Zaragoza, where a fire has been raging through the pine forest since Tuesday.

The army have been called in to help control the blaze that started after an accident in which a car crashed into a tree. The resulting fire has so far affected 2,200 hectares of pines in the area of Zuera.

High temperatures and gusty winds have hampered the efforts to control the fire. There are an estimated 400 people working to control the blaze, with 16 fire fighting planes being used during daylight hours.

Helicopters are also being used and can be seen lifting water from nearby swimming pools, to drop on the fire.

The Disappearing Gourmet

A Swiss gourmet on a pre-planned trip around Spain's sixty eight Michelin guide three star restaurants, has disappeared.

Pascal Henry was last seen on June 14th, when he was dining at the famous El Bulli restaurant in Roses, Girona. Police were alerted when the gourmet failed to turn up at restaurants in the Basque country.

After eating at El Bulli, Henry said that he was going to look for a business card from the establishment, but he never returned to the table. To add to the intrigue Henry's notebook was left on the table, complete with a list of restaurants he had eaten at, along with comments.

Spains Coastal Towns Growing With Foreigners

A report on Typically Spanish News says that half of Spanish municipalities are growing in size thanks to the foreign population.

Not surprisingly most of the growth can be found along Spain's Mediterranean coastline.

There are no surprises in the list of towns that have grown due to foreign population, not for anyone who knows the Spanish coastline.

Popular retirement areas such as Benalmedena, Torremolinos, Mijas and Fuengirola are all areas on the Western Costa del Sol that are on the list. Anyone who has visited these towns, from my experience can see straight away the huge number of English that are living in these places.

I am always surprised at how many of the Brits here don't consider themselves to be foreign.

But I digress the remainder of the list is Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, Torrevieja, Orihuela, Estepona and Gandia.

El Ejido actually has six times more foreigners than local people!

Raul: It Would Be Most Beautiful To Play For Spain Again

Real Madrid captain Raul says that he hopes that one day he will play for his country again following the appointment of the new Spain manager Vincente Del Bosque.

Raul played some of the best football of his career last season to spur Real Madrid on to the La Liga title. He was dropped from the Spanish squad by controversial manager Luis Aragones, who's decision to support the younger players was vindicated when they won the Euro 2008.

Despite the differences Raul wished Aragones all the best for his new job in Turkey and also to Vincente Del Bosque in Spain.

Raul said he would continue to play for Real, but it would be 'most beautiful' if he were to be called up for his country again.

Malaga CF Survive Bribery Scare

Allegations that Malaga CF 'bought' two games last season to win promotion, have been investigated by the Competition Committee following a complaint from a FIFA official who accused the club of 'buying two games' to ensure promotion to La Liga division one.

The investigation followed complaints from fourth placed Real Sociedad, who would have taken Malaga's place in the top league. They had claimed that Malaga 'bought' the victory against Sevilla Atletico during the final games of the season.

Malaga were in the top two of the second division for most of the season, but a bad run of form saw their points cushion disappear as they were overtaken and dropped to third. They eventually finished second on equal points with Sporting.

Real Sociedad finished the campaign in fourth place, four points behind.

The Competition Committee has fortunately kicked out the claims and Malaga will play in the Primera Division next season.

Beckham Would Love To Return To Madrid

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham has revealed to Spanish newspaper Marca that he would love to return to Real Madrid in some capacity when he hangs up his boots.

Beckham who still has his property in Madrid, admits that he misses the food, light, colour and fun of Madrid and says he will always be a Real supporter wherever he goes.

He would like to return to be a member of staff with the club that he calls the best in the world.

Now what would Sir Alex say to that?!

The Virgen Del Carmen

Yesterday July 16th was the day of the Virgen Del Carmen, in Spain.
This day is celebrated around Spain but specifically in the coastal areas as the Virgen Del Carmen, also known as the Stella Maris, is the star of the sea.

She is the patron of fishermen and also of the Spanish navy and stories are told about superstitious sailors in history, refusing to go to sea until it had been blessed by the Virgen.

For years Spaniards have followed the tradition of carrying the local statue of Carmen in a procession through the streets of town or village, ending at the sea. Here the Virgen is launched out to sea on a boat decked with flowers.

A celebration in Spain is not worth noting if it does not have some kind of pyrotechnics involved and the Virgen is put to sea amid a backdrop of fireworks.

Marine Recovery Centre Releases Turtles Back To Sea

Three Loggerhead turtles have been released at Malaga port, after being rescued and having recovered at the Marine Species Recovery Centre (CREMA).

One of the turtles was found off the coast of Almunecar and another in the Strait of Gibraltar last year where they both had trouble getting under water.
The third was found off Marbella last year suffering from hypothermia.

The Councillor for the Environment, Cinto Castilla was present to see the turtles released and also to announce the a new centre for CREMA at the mouth of the River Gudalhorce in Malaga.

The centre is currently treating six other turtles which it hopes to return to their natural habitat soon.

Nadal Injury Forces Withdrawal From Stuttgart

Rafa Nadal who won Wimbledon after overcoming five times winner Roger Federer on Sunday, has been advised by doctors not to take part in the Stuttgart championship.

The Wimbledon final was considered to be the best ever mens singles final at the SW London courts, finishing in an amazing tie break that threatened to go either way until the last ball.

However it has emerged that Nadal was nursing an injury picked up in his quarter final game. He has flown to Germany to offer his withdrawal from the championship personally and now intends to rest.

Nadal has played 63 games so far this year and won 56. He is still some 545 points behind Federer in the World Player rankings, but will lose a further 250 points for not defending his win last year, in Germany.

Spain Proposes To Extend Human Rights To Apes

Spanish Parliament has voiced it's support for giving 'Human Rights' to Great Apes, the first time that any national legislation has been called for such rights for 'non humans'.

Great Apes rights to life and freedom was proposed by scentists and philosophers who say that our closest genetic relatives need protective rights hitherto limited to humans.

Philosophers Peter Singer and Paolo Cavalieri founded the Great Ape project in 1993, arguing that Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Orang Utans and Bonobos should enjoy the right to life, freedom and should not be tortured.

While there are no known cases of Apes being used in experiments or tortured there is currently no law to prevent that from happening, explained Pedro Pozas of The Great Apes Project.

Under the proposals keeping apes for circuses, advertising or film will be forbidden, while the 315 apes in Spanish zoos should expect their conditions to improve.

Spain At Last - Euro 2008

A fantastic two weeks of International football at Euro 2008, came to an end last night when Spain beat Germany 1-o in the final of the competition, to win the Euro trophy.

Spain began the tournament among the favourites, but still carrying the tag of 'under achievers' similar to England , after losing out during the final stages of recent International competitions.

The first group game against Russia was among the best of the competition, with Russia often matching the accurate passing game of Spain, if lacking the flair and quality. Spain's 4-1 victory was non the less well deserved and spelled out a clear message that Spain were taking the tournament very seriously.

Even when Aragones resorted to his second eleven for the last group game, Spain still looked outrageously good, and beat Sweden more comfortably than the 2-1 score suggests.

Holland, Croatia and Portugal also looked impressive during the group stages, the Dutch in particular played some excellent football. But against the odds each of them fell at the quarter finals leaving Spain to beat Russia a second time to progress to the final, and Germany seeing off a spirited Turkish team to join them.

Spain v Germany provided an excellent advert for football, with chances for both teams throughout the game. The quality and wonderful football of Spain deservedly winning the game and the tournament.

This Spanish team is up there with the best I have seen at International level and they still have some very exciting youngsters at under 17 &21 waiting in the wings.

Malaga Promoted To La Liga Primera Division

It has been a long season following Malaga, especially over the last few months while their once healthy lead over the next club has diminished to nothing.

Unbelievably within a month of playing rivals Sporting, beating them and re opening an eight point lead, they were back to square one.

Over the last three games Malaga have managed to keep in touch with Sporting and they went into todays game on equal points, with Real Sociedad hovering two points behind, and above them all Numancia the champions.

Both Malaga and Sporting finished a nervy afternoon with wins and so join Numancia in La Liga next season.

Malaga can thank a good run in the first half of the season when they were unbeatable, for the promotion, as the second half, up until today has been disappointing.

Still it's great to see them back in La Liga, lets hope that they can build a team capable of staying in the top flight.

Malaga Fall From Grace

Just back from La Rosaleda and what a shock it has been. Malaga were playing fifth place Hercules, who really have nothing to play before as they cannot reach the top three promotion spots.

Malaga started well and Hercules were struggling, they were all over the place as Malaga piled on the pressure. Malaga were two up inside half an hour and it looked like a walk in the park. Even when Hercules pulled one back, on a brief excursion into the home team half, they didnt look a threat and Malaga made it 3-1 at half time.

The second half and Hercules were a different team, they were in control and suddenly the chances came for them to draw level. The second from the penalty spot left Malaga with ten men as the offender was first yellow carded and then after continuing to abuse the ref was shown a red.

Hercules then ran rampant making it 6-3 before Malaga pulled one back on the final whistle.
Malaga started the day in 3rd, their lowest place all season, but it looks to me as though they could miss out on promotion, barring a minor miracle.

Bojan Out Of Euro2008

Young Barcelona player Bojan will not feature in Spains Football team in the Euro2008. The wonder striker has asked Spain boss Luis Aragones not to select him for the finals, saying he did not want to take part for 'personal reasons.'

Fans calling for Real Madrid veteran Raul to be recalled to the international squad after a scintilating season for the La Liga champions, will be disappointed to hear that the player will not be in the Spanish squad either.
Raul has been back to his best again this season, on form he is magical at times and I have enjoyed watching his performances this year.

I am sure there will be plenty of talent on show in the Euro's, but its a shame we won't see these two playing.

Spanish Property Prices Fall By 30%

House prices in some parts of Spain have falling by 30% in the last twelve months says a report from Union de Creditos Inmobilarios (UCI) president Juan Carlos Sandoval.

His statement comes as real estate group Don Piso announce the closure of 120 of its offices with the loss of 350 jobs. Most of the closures are in the Cataluna area, but the problem is more widespread and affects the whole of the country.

Many large promoters and developers are using promotions and offers to try to move some of their stock as supply outstrips demand by a long chalk.

On the Costa del Sol developers have continued to develop into the less commercial areas and empty blocks of apartments are to be seen all along this stretch of Spain.

With the credit crunch affecting foreign buyers it will be interesting to see how much the property prices drop before they are of interest to the Spanish nationals.

While the UCI says the price drop makes for a good time to buy property, I would disagree as prices have some way to fall before they are realistically priced, as in the UK.

Nervy Times At Malaga CF

The last time I got to see Malaga play was April 13th, when they were sitting in second place in the league. They beat third placed Sporting 3-2 on that occassion, to open a gap of eight points between the two teams.

Since then, in four weeks, Malaga have lost three and drawn one game, while Sporting are now on equal points with them in joint second place.

Malaga traded places with Numancia at the top of league two, for half of the season before Numancia put some daylight between the clubs. However Malaga have sat pretty in second plave ever since and really should have secured a promotion place by now.

The season is far from over with five games still to be played. Things are looking ominous for Malaga who must re- find the form that they showed early season or risk throwing it all away.
Third place Real Sociedad could only draw in this weekends game, keeping them in fourth but only three points behind Malaga and Sporting.

Bob Dylan At Rockinrio Madrid

Bob Dylan has been confirmed to headline at Madrids Rockinrio festival. The 66 year old veteran of the music festival scene will play on the World Stage on July 5th.

Dylan joins an already impressive line up for the five day festival, with Amy Winehouse, The Police, Neil Young and Shakira amongst the many artistes performing.

The festival is preceded by the Lisbon Rockinrio segment that takes place at the end of May and beginning of June, with Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi and Joss Stone already lined up. Amy Winehouse will also appear in Lisbon.

A glorious day in Jerez, saw Spains Dani Pedrosa win the Moto gp in front of his home crowd, taking the chequered flag well in front of second placed Valentino Rossi.

In third place was pole sitter, and another Spainard Jorge Lorenzo, Rossi's team mate, once again keeping the former world champion honest. Pedrosa has been around the top of motogp for a while now, and only his own impetuousness has stopped him from becoming a world champion, but now with Lorenzo promoted this season to the top tier, Pedrosa has to share the adoration of the Spanish fans.

However today's result was an excellent boost to Pedrosa, who must now try to prove that he can continue at this level. While both Pedrosa and Lorenzo look to be future champions, Lorenzo in comparison appears to be a clamer person and that may be enough for him to make a challenge in the coming months.

Roger Waters Dark Side Of The Moon Tour In Spain

Former Pink Floyd rocker, Roger Waters is to perform just one date in Spain on his Dark Side Of The Moon tour. The gig has been confirmed for the 9th May in the village of Artafe in Granada.

A strange choice of venue perhaps, the gig will take place at the Artafe football ground at 10pm and some 25,000 fans are expected to pack the stadium.

Roger Waters created Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett in 1966, along with Richard Wright and Nick Mason and was responsible for writing most of the bands material after Barrett left the band in 1967, and up to his own acrimonious departure in 1985.

The concert features a light and sound spectacular that will last for 2 hours 45 minutes, and will feature Pink Floyd classics tracks from the albums The Wall, Wish You Were Here, The Final Cut and the legendary Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety.

The stage set will take 300 people a week and a half to build.

Zapatero Wins Spain Election

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his Socialist party, defeated the Conservative Popular Party lead by Mariano Rajoy in yesterdays Spanish election., and will continue in office for the next four years.

Zapatero's 169 seats to Rajoy's 153 is not enough to have an absolute majority, but the Socialists collected five more seats than in the last election.

Zapatero however spoke of a clear victory and urged unity in this 'new period' in Spanish politics. "The Spanish people have spoken clearly and have decided to open a new period without tension, without confrontation," Mr Zapatero told the flag-waving crowd gathered outside his party's Madrid headquarters.

The Prime Ministers programme of liberal reforms during the last four years, including gender equality law, same sex marriages and fast track divorces, would appear to have been endorsed by the voting public, despite opposition from the Catholic church.

The Popular Party who lost the last election over the Iraq war programme and moreover the Madrid bombings, accepted defeat and leader Rajoy sent a message to his rival wishing him luck 'for the good of Spain'.

Eurovision Song Contestant in Fixing Scandal

TVE the Spanish state television company recently hosted shows to find a singer to represent Spain in this years Eurovision Song Contest. Among the entrants, an Andalucian Flamenco singer, aged 70 Antonio Gonzalez, recieved the most telephone votes and was placed as number one contender.

However TVE officials discovered some irregularities in the telephone voting, believing some 110,000 votes should not count. And so Gonzalez has been demoted from first place to 36th.

The five finalists will battle it out in a TV gala on Saturday March 8th, to find out who will represent Spain.

Pesetas still being changed to Euros

Six years after the official change of currency for Spain, from Pesetas to Euros, the Banco de Espana reports that people are still bringing the old currency in to be exchanged.

Around thirty people a day still bring in pesetas in note or coin form to be changed into euros.

The bank's director also reveals that they offer a service to exchange burnt or damaged euro notes for new ones, so long as at least half of the note remains intact.
In some cases seriously damaged bank notes are sent to technicians for approval, before exchange.

Its not a surprise that the bank note exchanges take place as the euro notes are worn out after a few transactions!

Amy Winehouse at RockinRio Madrid and Lisbon

Five grammy award winner, Amy Winehouse, is confirmed to play at RockinRio in Madrid and Lisbon this summer.

The singer who is currently the subject of constant rumours over her drug habit, will headline at the Madrid festival, on day three of the five day event, July 4th.

James Morrison, Jamiroquai and Shakira will be among the big names sharing the bill with her

Amy will be performing in Lisbon on the opening day of the Portugese festival on 30th May. She will play after top rated Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, but before the headliner Lenny Kravitz.

A new opinion poll on voters in the Spanish election has been published by the advertising agency Vitruvio Leo Burnett working with the GAD, Gabinete de Análisis Demoscópico.

But instead of determining voters intentions they have tried to establish what sort of person votes for each of the parties...
The Socialist voters prefer brunettes, watch more Spanish cinema and use more cosmetics, while the Partido Popular supporters like bullfighting, taking a siesta, using cologne and have a preference for blondes.

Supporters of the various nationalist parties in Spain are those who drink most beer, and the left wing IU supporters enjoy modern art, sport and new technology.

Some of the findings are not surprising, PP voters drink most wine, for example, and read most newspapers, but also most gossip press, while there are more Socialist vegetarians and nationalists are confirmed meat eaters.

One thing supporters of the two main parties do have in common – they both prefer whiskey to brandy.

Brits asked for "voluntary tax" to legalise homes

Residents in the inland village of Vinuela on the Eastern Costa del Sol have received letters from the local town hall asking for "voluntary payments" of between six and twelve thousand euro's, to make their homes legal.

Most of the people affected are British or German, and they have said that they will be forming a protest group to protect their rights and to "denounce" this odd system of collecting tax.

Some residents it seems have already made the payments for fear of losing their properties, but the action group that attracted 300 people to its first meeting, claimed they will be fighting om behalf of everybody involved.

The letters are dated from the time the illegal building started and are stamped by the town hall, but have no signature and no return address.

Banderas in demolition row

Even the rich and famous are not exempt from the illegal building row, as Malaga's famous film star son, Antonio Banderas has found out.
Banderas who bought his beach front home in Marbella eleven years ago was issued with a demolition order, affecting a 300sq metre wing of the property, in 2003.

His lawyers failed to get the order overturned and Banderas has now been told he has eight weeks to demolish the offending wing.

The star was told that the original permission for the "extension" to the property was illegal and that it had been built on land designated for public use.

Neighbours of Banderas have argued that he is the victim of corrupt town hall officials who allowed the property to be built on illegally reclassified land for backhanders.
The wing was built by a previous owner.

British couple watch dream turn to nightmare

A British couple who moved to Spain to build their dream home in the sun, watched their dream disappear as the home was demolished.

Despite buying the land legally and receiving planning permission for the villa in 2002, the regional government deemed the planning permission given by the local town hall was illegal.

The regional government claimed that the property had been built on land that was considered "green belt", and won a court order to for its demolition.

The couple's solicitor has said that he will be lodging a claim for 600,000 euros compensation, for their home and damages for the stress that the couple have been through.

Spain tops pedestrian deaths

A new survey by EuroTest and the RACC drivers association has reported that more pedestrians are killed crossing roads in Spain than any other European country.

The survey found that 680 pedestrians were killed while crossing or walking alongside Spanish roads in 2006.
The findings have prompted calls for the Spanish traffic Authorities and the public to work to improve road safety. The report found that an amazing 91% of pedestrian deaths in 2005, were found not to be using pedestrian or zebra crossings.

As a consequence signs have been added to crossings in Barcelona, warning that "One in every three people killed in traffic accidents were on foot."

Malaga CF still on top

Unfortunately for one reason or another I have not been able to follow the last few Malaga home games. They have been trading places with rivals Numancia in what is becoming a two horse race for the segunda title.

Malaga visited Cordoba on Saturday in what is considered as a local derby. It lived up to that title with tackles flying in all over the place in a fast and furious game. Malaga won 1-0 Baha scoring in the first few seconds of the game. Malaga had a man sent off with 20 mins to go, but Cordoba could not make the extra man count.
Malaga just about deserved it, and with Numancia managing only a draw, Malaga are on top again by just one point.

Fito y Fitipaldis

During the early summer months of this year, I was normally awakened at weekends by this song, being played very loudly by my Spanish neighbour in our apartment block. At the time I was unfamiliar with Fito and Fitipaldis, but within a short while I began to really enjoy it.
I am always receptive to good music and since living in Spain have tried to listen to various bands and singers, but this is the first one that hits the spot.

Alonso goes back to Renault

Spain's two time World champion, Fernando Alonso has opted to join the Renault team, today.
He has negotiated a contract that clearly defines his role within Renault, as their number one driver.

Such is Renault's trust in Alonso, they have allowed last years rookie Heikki Kovalainen to leave, so as to honour Alonso's place as number one driver.

Nelson Piquet Jr, has been promoted from test driver to driver number two.

In my apartment if I put on a few lights and the microwave I blow the fuse, I hope the same fate doesnt befall Malaga City.

A weekend in Sevilla

Had a great weekend in Sevilla a couple of weeks ago. My first visit to this beautiful city, but I am sure it will not be my last.

Spent Saturday doing the tourist thing, sightseeing and window shopping and of course most importantly sitting in the pavement cafe's having a coffee and tapas, watching the world go by.

Met up with a friend early evening down by the River and had a couple of hours fishing, 'til the sun went down.

Back to the hotel to shower and clean up and then back out on the town for dinner and a few drinks.

Sunday was spent fishing again, this time out in the countryside just north of Sevilla. A beautiful, quiet spot, where we stayed all afternoon. I am not a great fisherman, but it is an incredible form of relaxation and enjoyment.

The weekend has gone before you know it, so will plan to stay a bit longer next time.

Around 30,000 turned out to see the match against poverty, charity football game at the Roselada Malaga on Monday night.

More an exhibition of footballing skills than a competitive match, the teams ended with a draw at 2-2. Zidane received a standing ovation before the game had kicked off, while support for Ronaldo seemed quite muted. In fact second biggest cheer of the night, went to Michael Schumacher who came on as a sub for Ronaldo's team.

It was great entertainment from all involved, and an excellent last chance for me to see the player that has been the best footballer in the world for many of the past seasons, Zinedine Zidane.

Malaga stay on top

On a cold evening at the Roselada, Malaga and Racing Ferrol managed to raise the temperature in the stadium, with a thrilling game. Both teams created chances throughout the first half and Malaga were unfortunate to trail by 2-0 at half time.

The second half was equally exciting with Malaga getting a goal back from the penalty spot, and the Hidalgo heading the equaliser just two minutes later. Malaga's third goal looked to be well offside, but the fourth was a lovely goal from substitute Peragon, wrapping up an excellent 4-2 victory.

Schumi still the one to beat

Over 3000 Formula 1 fans turned up at Barcelona's Catalunya circuit onTuesday, to watch ex world champion, Michael Schumacher put the new Ferrari through its paces.
Schumacher managed the fastest time of the day, forcing Britain's David Coulthard to quip, "It looks as though he's got talent. He will make his way to F1."

"It's good to see I'm still able to do it. It was great fun and I really like it a lot," said the German.
Schumacher has no intentions of returning to racing however, and is enjoying his position with Ferrari as technical advisor.

Malaga go top

Malaga beat third placed Sporting Gijon away from home 1-0, on Sunday. With top place Numancia losing to Sevilla Atletico by the same score, Malaga moved back on top of the league.

Malaga are playing tonight in the Copa del Rey 4th round, first leg tie against la Liga premier team, Racing Santander.

I wont be at the game, but will be back for the league game on Saturday, against Racing Ferrol. I will be returning to La Roseleda on Monday night for the charity game Zidane and friends vs Ronaldo and friends.

The Jam in Spain

Just saw this advert on a local gig guide, The Jam will be playing in Granada, on Saturday 10th November, minus Paul Weller!

It appears that former Jam bass player Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler have hired help from Russell Hastings and Dave Moore to recreate the sounds of the Jam.

After testing the water in the UK, the band sold out 20 dates in May in just 2 weeks. The gig in Granada will be followed by another 20+ over the next few weeks, ending at the Brighton Centre, on 21 December, coinciding with the original bands last show at that same arena some 25 years ago.

If I was in Granada I might be tempted, but really Jam without Paul Weller, what can I say?

Free Soul Band

A couple of times during the summer, I was fortunate enough to visit La Tortuga Rock Bar in La Vinuela. The bar is tucked away in the old village next to the Vinuela hotel.
This is an excellent music bar, with videos showing outside on a huge whitewashed wall. Live music is available inside the bar and if no live acts are on, a good selection of mainly English music is played through the sound system.

The first time I went to the bar to see the Free Soul Band, who were due on stage at midnight. The band eventually arrived at about 2 am and played through til about 4am! They were so good that i returned to see them again.

The band play a lot of old r&b and soul stuff, in the style of James Brown and the Blues Brothers and create a real party atmosphere. I'm not really sure how many there are in the band as the stage is too small to accommodate them all, the sax and trombone players were in amongst the crowd!

Here is a sample of what to expect, and needless to say, if you get a chance to see them take it!

Schumi in Barcelona Ferrari test

Ferrari legend, Michael Schumacher is set to dust down his overalls, to test the latest Ferrari at Barcelona next week. Ferrari want to tap into the 38-year-old's experience of F1 cars without electronic driver aids ahead of the ban on such systems for next year.

Schumacher who retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2006, has no intentions of making a comeback and is testing as part of his contractual obligations as Ferrari technical adviser.

Schumacher will test on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Circuit de Catalunya. He has been in Spain already this last weekend at the Valencia circuit for the Moto GP, where he demonstrated his skills on two wheels, by riding Casey Stoner's title winning Ducati, after the end of the Moto GP season.

Malaga Blue's

Malaga's excellent run of home wins came to a dramatic end today, at the Rosaleda stadium.
New league leaders, Numancia earned the three points beating Malaga 1-0.

Malaga paid the price for not scoring whilst dominating the first half, in the best game I have seen here all season. Two bicycle kicks and another acrobatic effort, were all gloriously mis kicked, when a more direct approach may have achieved a goal.

The second half saw Numancia get into the game and soon took the lead with a good old fashioned header, and looked the slightly better of the two teams by the end of the game.

The refereeing was pretty awful, but otherwise an excellent game, if not result.

Football Fixtures

The football fixture's in Spain, work a bit differently to the English league. While the fixtures are allocated at the start of the season, each game is given a weekend for each game. The exact date and day is not confirmed until normally five or six days before the game.

Even then its a safe bet to check on the day, before leaving home, as i found two weeks ago. The Malaga game had been scheduled for Sunday at 18.00 kick off. On the Saturday that was the information on both Malaga CF and the liga websites. When I checked on Sunday, the game had been move back an hour to 17.00!

Needless to say, that while we arrived knowing the revised timing, there were many latecomers throughout the first half. The game was allegedly re scheduled to avoid coverage of the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix, although finishing half hour after the race started didn't really help out much. Neither did showing the start of the grand prix on the screens in the ground, for fifteen minutes of the second half.

Starstruck in Barcelona

Woody Allen recently began shooting his new film in Barcelona. The film as yet untitled will be shot over seven weeks in Barcelona, Asturias and New York.

The New York directors presence in the city has however provoked a real confrontation in the Barcelona City council's commission of Culture, Education and Social Health.

PP representative Angels Esteller has stated that the municipal government team, has made a spectacle of the shooting and they are elbowing each other to photograph themselves with the American Director.

Hope the film is as amusing.

Dead Day

Today is a bank holiday in Spain. It is All Saints Day, a day for remembering loved one's that have passed on. An English acquaintance refers to it as "Dead Day".

All this last week, trestle table's full of flowers have appeared on the roadsides of, villages and towns, along with droves of little old ladies ready to purchase.
Then later in the day the little old ladies can be seen heading for the cemeteries, beautiful flowers in one hand and a step ladder under the other arm.

Here, the coffins are put into a wall and are stacked, one on top of the other and can be 2 metres high, so that's why the step ladders.

I have not managed to keep up to date lately. I have been helping out a good friend setting up a couple of web blogs.

My two passions in life are football and music, and the sites that i have been working on cover just those subjects. Buzzin' Football is a blog that covers stuff from the English Premier League and Spanish la Liga mainly, but anything about Football is posted. Buzzin'Music is, well its about music surprisingly, and covers anything that fits that description.

I am still following Malaga CF, and have been fortunate enough to see all of their home games. They are currently top of the BBVA liga (=championship in uk) and have won all of the games at home, but lost the last two away games. They are one point ahead of second place Numancia, who they play on Sunday at home, so given this seasons home form, it should be a another win!

Malaga CF have got off to a flying start in liga segunda, in Spain. They have won their first three games of the season and sit on top of the division. They are playing some very good football too and also look physically strong enough to do well.

Premiership or La Liga

Well, if week one of the premiership threw up some well anticipated excitement, week two never quite reached fever pitch. Unless of course you are a Spurs fan. The usual controversy followed Chelseas visit to Anfield and Man Utd somehow failed to score against a tactically naive City.
How refreshing for me living in Spain to watch the SuperCopa live on tv on sunday night.
Real Madrid the la liga champions took on Sevilla the cup winners and what a game it turned out to be. Both teams opting for all out attack and sensational entertainment that left me wondering why i bother with the premiership at all! It was Sevilla that took the honours in a 5-3 victory with ex West Ham man Freddie Kanute bagging a hat trick. It was however no pushover with end to end football all the way. Good to see Van Nistelroy back for Madrid, but it would be wrong to single out any single player from either side.
La Liga kicks offf this weekend and i cant wait!!
